Music For a Truly Memorable Wedding

Music is an important ingredient that will complement the many different parts of your wedding celebration just as a soundtrack enhances a movie. My first bit of advice is to go over your budget carefully and decide on a realistic amount of money you can comfortably allocate to music. I assure you, it will be an investment well made.

Now you are ready to start looking. Give yourself plenty of time to search for a band, make phone calls, ask loads of questions, listen to tapes, view videos, perhaps go see musicians or deejays perform. And finally, come to an agreement with your partner-to-be as to which sounds best fits into the scenario you both envision for your wedding and reception.

Ceremony music can consist of a poignant solo instrument, vocal, or a group of musicians. Usually, music for the ceremony will different from that of the reception, so you'll probably be hiring two groups. Occasionally, members of the wedding band can also play for the ceremony. That's a plus because it simplifies things and may cut down on the cost.

Cocktails and dinner can be accompanied by a pianist, small combo, full band or deejay. For live music, the size of your band will be determined by the number of guests to be entertained, size of your wedding locale and the amount of music for dancing you desire to provide.

One of your decisions will be whether to have live music or a deejay. This decision should be made after interviewing both. Leave your options and mind open. And, by all means ask some of your recently married friends for their input. You can even have it both ways. If you opt for live music for cocktails, dinner and dancing, hire a deejay for the breaks and for extended late hour dancing. Again, consult your budget.

Provide prospective bands/deejays with as many details as possible including, the date, how many hours you'll need them for, location of event, number of guests, schedule of events, type of music you desire and special requests. Prices can vary considerably depending on length of the engagement, travel time, number of musicians involved, extra effects or equipment requested from deejay, special considerations requiring more detail, etc.

Once you've made your selection and all details are arranged, you will receive a contract. Read it carefully and make sure the date, times and details are correct.

The music you have chosen will provide a harmonious finishing touch to the many caring choices you have already made. Take a deep breath, and let yourself have a wonderful time.
